Play a spooky song in three easy steps!

I had the opportunity to meet a boy last spring who told me he loved scary things! This made me think of spooky songs that would be good for a beginner to play.

I landed on this classic, the opening line to Toccata in D Minor by Johann Sebastian Bach. Have a listen!

Spooky, right?? I realized that even though it sounds pretty advanced, it’s really only made of three main moves, each of which are really easy to learn. So if you’re interested in learning this spooky song, watch this short video to learn how.

If you prefer written instructions, here they are! Start with your baby finger on A (here’s a blog post on how to find A on your piano or keyboard).

Step 1 - Play baby finger, ring finger, baby finger, and hold!

Step 2 - Play every other finger all the way down to your thumb. (This will be D)

Step 3 - Cross over your index finger to the black key just below your thumb, then come back to your thumb.

How did you do?? If you have an electric keyboard and want to make this extra spooky, you can try this with an organ sound! Also, you can have fun playing this spooky song higher and lower on your instrument!

Have fun!
