How do we learn to create music for ourselves?

A lot of the aspiring songwriters that I teach think that their biggest barrier to writing music is their lack of music theory -- but after working with them I realize that their true barrier is worrying about what other people might think of what they create. It's totally normal to feel self-conscious when you start to write your own music. But if you can overcome this barrier, your songwriting practice can become rich and deeply rewarding! Here are a few thoughts on how I overcame this fear in my own practice.
