Are you interested in music theory and songwriting?

If you’ve been following my channel for any amount of time, you’ve probably noticed that I love talking about music theory. One of the reasons I love talking about music theory so much is because of how personally beneficial it was for me to learn.

Learning music theory deepened my appreciation for music beyond anything that I thought possible. It’s not to say I didn’t appreciate music before I learned music theory — I loved it! In fact, I had been playing piano for nearly 15 years before I learned any music theory, learning lots of songs and even writing music of my own. But once I learned music theory, it just opened up a whole new way of appreciating music: it gave me so much more insight into why I liked a song and what songwriters were doing when they crafted their music.

I guess it’s that connection between music theory and song appreciation that I’d like to explore some more in upcoming posts. I’d like to put together a series on how you can use the principles of music theory to enhance your own songwriting, specifically for people who don’t already have any background in music theory.

Rather than present music theory as a set of rules that must be followed, my intention is to structure the conversation to show how the principles of music theory actually follow the human emotions, and how you can infuse more of your emotions into your songwriting if you have a grasp of certain music theory concepts.

If this sounds interesting to you, please reach out! Hearing from my readers and viewers is how I know I’m heading in the right direction. If this does sound interesting to you, please let me know if you have any questions about music theory or using music theory in your songwriting process. Thanks!
